It was great to see the recently published article in the Dublin Gazette, highlighting the wonderful collaboration between Boccia Ireland and the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH), for adults and children.
These two organisations are joining forces to further enhance Boccia as a rehabilitation activity in the NRH.
Boccia Ireland, the governing body of the sport in Ireland, oversees all facets of Boccia, catering to all levels, from complete beginners to elite players. Teaming up with the NRH aims to make the sport more accessible to a wider audience. Boccia stands out as a sport open to everyone, regardless of age, height, weight, or disability.

At the NRH, Boccia is a popular sport, integrated into patients’ rehabilitation programmes and enjoyed also through the NRH Recreational Therapy Service. Through the years, generous donations and funding received from donors has enabled the NRH Foundation to support the Hospital in this rehabilitation activity by funding replacement equipment over the years.
Through collaboration with various external sporting organisations, the NRH Sports and Exercise Physiotherapy Department has been able to offer the opportunity for patients of all abilities to engage in sports, whether that be sports they already participated in pre their admission to the NRH or discovering new sports they never played before. Through this opportunity, many patients start their new sport journey at the NRH and will continue their engagement in the sport following discharge.
The NRH Foundation is delighted to be part of this journey also, through providing funding to enable many of these external agencies to come into the NRH and provide coaching programmes to the patients.
